Delavan Athletes Break School Records at PORTA
The Delavan Panther contingent of the Illini Central Track & Field Team delivered a historic night at the PORTA Invitational, with three Panthers rewriting the school record books in a single meet. Elyse Brinkmeyer, Gwen Tierney, and Corie Green each set new Delavan Track & Field records on Thursday, showcasing the program’s rising talent and competitive drive.
Brinkmeyer opened the night with a standout performance in the 1600 meters, clocking a 5:14.3 to break the previous school record of 5:14.96 set by Annabelle LaFary in 2025. Her strong pacing and late-race surge secured not only a personal best but also one of the fastest times in the region this season.
In the field events, Tierney delivered a breakthrough moment of her own. Competing in the discus, she launched a throw of 111 feet, 2 inches, surpassing the long‑standing school record of 106’ 6” held by Ellen McConnell since 1983. Tierney’s performance marks a major milestone for Delavan’s throwing program, breaking a record that had stood for more than four decades.
Rounding out the trio of record‑setters, Green turned in a dominant showing in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:54.0. His time eclipsed the previous school record of 1:54.93, set by John McConnell in 1985. Green’s race featured a powerful final lap that separated him from the field and secured his place in Delavan Track & Field history.
The combination of personal bests, school records and strong team performances made the PORTA Invitational one of the most memorable meets of the season for Delavan athletes. Their achievements reflect months of dedication and highlight the continued growth of the Illini Central/Delavan Track & Field program.
