New Season for Community Garden

As spring settles over Delavan, the Common Ground Community Garden is stepping into a new season—and a new chapter in its story. What began more than a decade ago on a modest city donated lot on South Pine Street has grown into one of the community’s most recognizable grassroots projects. Now, with new leadership and a refreshed vision, Anticipation Acres is preparing for its next phase of service to the community.

The garden’s earliest days were humble. The original lot, once home to a dilapidated structure, was cleared at Common Ground’s expense before volunteers began tilling the soil. But it quickly became clear that the space could not support the scale of the organization’s ambitions. When the larger lot just east of Dollar General on 4th Street became available—with room for a shed, electrical access, and running water—Common Ground moved operations and christened the new site Anticipation Acres.

For a time, the garden even operated a Saturday farmstand along Oak Street, offering fresh, organically grown produce directly to residents. The stand was popular, but the demand soon outpaced the garden’s ability to grow, harvest, and staff the operation entirely with volunteers. Even so, the mission remained unchanged: to provide healthy, local food to neighbors, restaurants and the Delavan Food Pantry.

This year brings a bittersweet transition. Previous leaders Nick Georgi and Kelly Powell are departing Delavan for career opportunities in Maine, leaving behind a legacy of stewardship and community building. Stepping into their roles are Coti and Adele Wheeler, who are already at work retooling the garden’s operations while honoring its founding purpose.

The Wheelers say the focus this season is sustainability—of the soil, the harvest and the volunteer base that makes the garden possible. They plan to streamline planting, expand partnerships and create more accessible opportunities for residents to pitch in.

And there will be plenty of chances. From bed preparation to weeding days to harvest season help, Anticipation Acres depends on many hands working together. Residents are encouraged to watch the Dispatch’s Hometown Happenings for upcoming volunteer dates and ways to get involved.

As the first seedlings go into the ground, Anticipation Acres stands ready for a season of renewal—rooted in community, nourished by volunteers and growing toward a vibrant future.
