Optimist Fundraiser Success Fuels Holiday Gift Drive

The Delavan Optimist Club gathered on Thursday, November 13, for a meeting filled with celebration, generosity, and forward-looking plans to support local youth during the holiday season. The club proudly welcomed three new members: Pat Woiwode, Debbie Woiwode, and Alyce Parsons, whose enthusiasm and community spirit were met with warm applause and heartfelt introductions.

Fundraising Committee Chairperson Liz Skinner shared exciting news about the club’s annual fundraiser, A Night at the Mouse Races, which raised over $9,000—nearly double the take from last year's Trivia Night event. The funds will directly support the club’s Youth Programs, with a special focus on the Christmas Gift Drive, a cherished tradition that brings holiday joy to children from families facing financial hardship.

In a unanimous and compassionate decision, the club voted to provide each participating family with a $75 grocery gift card, ensuring that the season’s warmth extends beyond wrapped presents to shared meals and full tables.

Christy Hart, Chairperson of the Christmas Gift Drive committee, reported that this year’s initiative will serve 25 children from 14 families. As in years past, gifts will be purchased from anonymous wish lists, preserving the dignity and privacy of each family while honoring their children’s hopes.

In addition to its holiday initiative, the Delavan Optimist Club has begun laying the groundwork for a new Avenue of Flags program, set to debut in time for the 250th Anniversary of the United States next year. Optimist member Pete Ross conducted an in-depth search for materials and presented the club with a comprehensive briefing on costs and display options. The program will be overseen by committee chair Kelly Powell, with members Pete Ross, Walt Dare, Liz Skinner, and Steve Skinner contributing to its development. The club aims to have the patriotic display operational by Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, adding a vibrant and meaningful tribute to the community’s celebration of America’s founding.

At the close of the meeting, members selected one or more families to shop for, marking the beginning of a season of giving that exemplifies the club’s mission: to bring out the best in youth, our community, and ourselves.
