Cro-Knits Weave Warmth, Wit, and Winter Wear for Those in Need

In the center of the Delavan Historical Society, laughter and yarn intertwine as the Cro-Knits gather twice a month to craft comfort for those in need. This spirited group of volunteers meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month, from 10 a.m. to noon, at 319 S Locust Street—though their impact stretches far beyond those two hours.

Around a grouping of well-worn tables, members swap stories, share town updates, and offer support as needles click and hooks glide. It’s a rhythm of friendship and purpose, where every stitch carries warmth and goodwill.

So far in 2025, the Cro-Knits have donated an impressive array of handmade winter wear:

  • 300 scarves
  • 54 headbands
  • 470 adult winter hats
  • 500 children’s winter hats

These items have found their way to grateful hands through partnerships with the Delavan United Methodist Church, Common Ground’s Ridge Ministry, South Side Mission, Sophia’s Kitchen, and the Salvation Army in Peoria.

At a recent gathering, teenage Cro-Knit member and yarn aficionado Avery Griffith captivated the group with a demonstration of a hand-cranked yarn winder—transforming an ordinary skein of yarn into tidy, easy-to-use cakes—each a piece of art in their own right.

The Cro-Knits roster is as vibrant as their creations, including: Janice Allgood, Karla Carr, Liz Fortney, Avery Griffith, Cassidy Griffith, Mark Griffith, Diane Heberer, Julie Hopkins, Mary Ruth Lowry, Ellen McConnell, Kelly Powell, and Gail Strunk. Each brings their own flair, stories, and stitches to the table.

Whether you're a seasoned stitcher or simply curious, newcomers are always welcome. The Cro-Knits invite anyone with a heart for helping and a love for conversation to join them in weaving warmth into the fabric of our community.
