Delavan Joins National Movement to Limit Cell Phone Use During School

In a move echoing a growing national trend, Delavan Schools have officially implemented a new policy restricting student use of cell phones and smart watches during the school day. The decision, announced ahead of the fall semester, aims to reduce distractions, improve classroom engagement, and foster a more focused learning environment.

Under the new guidelines, students may use their devices before and after school, but once the first bell rings, phones and smart watches must be silenced and stored in lockers or book bags. The policy applies throughout the entire school day—including lunch and recess—and prohibits calling, texting, taking photos or videos, or accessing any other functions.

Superintendent Amanda Geary noted at a recent school board meeting that Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has hinted that the state may be moving toward a mandate on cell phone restrictions in schools. “We have seen how these kids we have here now are losing out on education, about how it is affecting their mental health,” Geary said, emphasizing the urgency behind the district’s decision.

The policy also addresses the use of earbuds and headphones, which are now banned in classrooms unless deemed necessary by a teacher for a specific assignment or assessment. Exceptions will be made for students with accommodations outlined in an IEP or 504 plan.

Delavan’s decision aligns with similar moves in school districts across the country, where educators and parents alike have raised concerns about the impact of constant connectivity on student attention spans, social development, and academic performance.

Local reactions have been mixed. Some parents applaud the change, citing the importance of face-to-face interaction and reduced screen time. Others worry about the inconvenience of not being able to reach their children directly during the day.

As the school year begins, administrators say they’ll monitor the policy’s impact and remain open to feedback from families and staff. For now, Delavan joins a growing chorus of schools nationwide asking students to put their phones away—and tune in to the world around them.
