Summer Reading Takes Center Stage at Ayer Library Events
The Ayer Library’s summer reading program sparked joy, color, and community spirit with two recent events that invited families and young readers to connect, celebrate, and create.
On Monday, July 21, Veterans Park transformed into a playground of excitement during Party in the Park. Bounce houses kept the energy high, thanks to volunteers Kelly Watts, Lauren Saylor, and Sally Lessen, who kept the long line of bouncing kids moving. A mountain of tiny shoes piled in front served as a charming reminder of just how popular the activity was.
Adding to the fun, M&K Parties of Farmington provided both the bounce houses and a trackless train, which looped around the basketball court to the delight of partygoers. Mike Lauer, owner of M&K Parties, served as conductor and engineer, bringing extra cheer to his role behind the wheel.
Nearby, guests cooled down with sno-cones in lemon-lime, cherry, blue raspberry—or a mix of all three—generously served by Library Director Julie Houston, Library Assistant Natalie Lessen, and Library Volunteer Elyse Brinkmeyer. The savory side of the menu featured hot dogs grilled by Duane Lessen, plus chips and drinks that fueled the fun late into the afternoon.
Midway through the festivities, the crowd gathered to hear the results of Ayer Library’s Tiny Art Contest, an annual highlight showcasing pint-sized masterpieces across age groups. Winners included:
- Birth to Pre-K: Vera W., Ezra M., Crawford B.
- K–4th Grade: Rilea K., Nathan B., Nolan H.
- 5th–8th Grade: Gabby L., Alison B., Sage G., Nora H.
- High School and Older: Doug A., Sarah F., Tiffany B.
Each piece reflected the vibrant imagination of its creator, proving that art can make a big impact—no matter the canvas size.
On Thursday, July 24, Ayer Library welcomed budding artists for Paint Night, led by part-time Library Assistant Emily Shearer. With Library Assistant Natalie Lessen on hand to assist, participants Julia Shearer, Judy Aeschlimann, Sarah Flint, and Adele Wheeler explored the magic of the Northern Lights, starting with a blank black canvas and learning techniques such as fading and feathering, paint mixing, and splattering to create a shimmering starry night. With guidance on brush selection and an ingenious use of a makeup brush, each artist transformed their canvas into a glowing landscape of color and light.
These events are part of Ayer Library’s ongoing commitment to fostering literacy, creativity, and community spirit throughout the summer. With more activities on the horizon, Delavan residents have plenty of opportunities to keep reading, keep creating, and keep celebrating together.
