Mother Nature Turned up the Heat, Fire Dept Turned up the Fun

Veteran firefighter Matt Alvis and probationary firefighter Matt Chase battle a blaze head-on from a dramatic flashover fire demonstration.

Mother Nature Turned up the Heat, Fire Dept Turned up the Fun

The temperatures may have soared, but that didn’t stop families and neighbors from showing up in full force at the Delavan Fire Department’s Open House on Saturday, June 21. Running from noon to 3 p.m., the event was a tremendous success, drawing a spirited crowd despite the sweltering summer heat.

Fire Chief Chris Sydney and his team pulled out all the stops to make the afternoon memorable. Visitors enjoyed a rare behind-the-scenes look at the tools and talent that keep the community safe, including an eye-opening demonstration of an automobile airbag deployment. Chief Sydney also led informative tours through the department’s training house, giving attendees a glimpse into how firefighters are trained to handle real-life emergencies. He demonstrated infrared heat imaging technology, allowing guests to see how the department detects hidden heat signatures during search and rescue missions.

The event truly was a family affair. Chief Sydney’s son, Ethan, ran the ever-popular temporary tattoo station, keeping kids lined up and beaming with excitement. His wife, Jess, was a steady force at the lunch table, making sure hot dogs, cookies, and drinks were served quickly and generously to the hungry crowd.

Deputy Chief Roger Litwiller took on what many dubbed the “coolest” role of the day—literally—manning the fire hose station where kids delighted in soaking each other (and sometimes themselves) under the afternoon sun. Their laughter echoed down the block as they took turns gripping the hose and letting loose powerful streams of water, getting a taste of the firefighter experience.

Adding to the excitement, firefighters Brandon Edmonds and Sean Bluhm ferried kids—and more than a few enthusiastic grown-ups—on thrilling firetruck rides around town. Smiles, waving hands, and the occasional flashing lights created lasting memories for all aboard.

Capping off the day was a dramatic flashover room fire demonstration, where veteran firefighter Matt Alvis and probationary firefighter Matt Chase suited up in full gear to confront the blaze head-on. The demonstration offered a sobering and awe-inspiring glimpse into the extreme heat and conditions firefighters train for and face in real emergencies.

With hands-on activities, high-energy demonstrations, and heartwarming community spirit, the Delavan Fire Department’s Open House was more than just a fun afternoon—it was a powerful reminder of the dedication, camaraderie, and service that fuel the town’s volunteer firefighting team.
