Panthers Swept by Hornets in Saturday Doubleheader

The Delavan Panthers faced tough competition on Saturday, losing both games of a doubleheader to the Heyworth Hornets. Despite strong performances at the plate, the Panthers couldn’t overcome early deficits, losing the first game 9-5 and the second 7-5.

Game 1:

The Hornets capitalized on early opportunities in the opener, scoring eight runs in the first two innings. Key hits from Gabby Dow and Emily Rogers, along with a pair of defensive miscues by the Panthers, gave Heyworth a commanding lead.

Delavan battled back with offense powered by Lainey Klokkenga, who went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, and another single across the third, fifth, and seventh innings. Jayley Fisher and Addi Fisher added to the effort, driving in two runs apiece. Joselyn Soldal contributed two hits, while Klokkenga stole two bases.

Klokkenga pitched a complete game but took the loss, surrendering nine runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out six and walking one. Despite out-hitting the Hornets 11 to 9, the Panthers couldn’t close the gap.

Game 2:

The second game saw the Panthers attempt a dramatic comeback after trailing 6-0 in the sixth inning. Delavan rallied to score five runs through a combination of singles and aggressive base running.

Once again, Klokkenga led the offensive charge with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, showcasing her versatility. Jayley Fisher delivered two RBIs and Kara Lowry joined Klokkenga with multiple stolen bases as the team totaled four steals.

On the mound, Klokkenga pitched in relief, allowing three unearned runs on two hits over 4.1 innings while striking out three and walking one. Starter Mia Mammen struggled early, giving up four runs on four hits and four walks across 2.2 innings.

Although the Panthers out-hit the Hornets 9 to 6, they couldn’t pull off the comeback. Heyworth’s solid defense and timely pitching helped them hold on for the victory.

Looking ahead, the Panthers will regroup as they travel to face ROWVA/Galva/Williamsfield on Monday.
