Three in a Row
Panthers Are on a Roll
An amazing performance from strikeout specialist Lainey Klokkenga, number 9, powered the Delavan Panthers to a 3-0 win over the El Paso-Gridley Titans on Saturday, as the ace pitcher struck out 13 batters while allowing just five hits in a complete-game shutout.
Both teams showcased strong pitching, but it was the Panthers who emerged on top. Klokkenga kept El Paso-Gridley hitters off balance all game, walking only one batter in seven innings of work.
The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the third when batting powerhouse Addi Fisher, number 2, delivered a crucial two-strike single, bringing in the first run of the game. The offense struck again in the fifth, sending the outfield alive with honking horns as Klokkenga launched a solo home run over the left field fence to extend the lead.
At the plate, Miley Harper, number 13, led the Panthers with two hits in three at-bats, while Fisher, Klokkenga, and Harper each drove in a run.
The Panthers' defense was flawless, playing an error-free game, with Jayley Fisher, number 12, behind the plate with spring-loaded reflexes. If a Titan was lucky enough to make it on base, they were not going to advance with a steal, as Fisher was immediately on her feet, keeping the pressure on. Makenna Diekhoff, number 14, playing first base, seemed to have a magnetic mitt; no matter how off a throw to first was, the catch was made, and the runner was out.
The Panthers will look to continue their momentum as they host Tremont on Tuesday in their next matchup.
