Brewing More Than Coffee

Common Ground is Stirring Up Promise and Possibilities

Located on Locust Street in the heart of Delavan, Common Ground of Central Illinois is more than just a cozy café with delicious baked goods and fantastic coffee—it’s a mission-driven hub where faith, food, and fellowship intersect. Operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Common Ground has quietly become a cornerstone of community support, offering not only fresh-baked goods and warm coffee but also a place of connection, restoration, and purpose.

The Bakery and Café, open Tuesday through Saturday, is the most visible expression of Common Ground’s mission. But behind the counter, the organization is working tirelessly to uplift lives through job training, mentorship, and ministry. Whether it’s helping someone re-enter the workforce, offering a listening ear, or simply serving a cinnamon roll with a smile, Common Ground is committed to being a place where everyone is seen and valued.

A Mission That Needs Fuel

To sustain its impact, Common Ground is calling on the community to become monthly donors. Their current goal is to raise $3,600 per month—enough to keep the Bakery and Café thriving. They’re inviting supporters to pledge $50 a month, a manageable amount that, when multiplied, can make a transformative difference.

The Ridge Ministry

Serving the community of Goofy Ridge, this ministry began with a group of young men who felt called to live and serve among those in need. Today, The Ridge Ministry partners with local churches to offer weekly Bible studies, service projects, food support, and relational encouragement. It’s a boots-on-the-ground effort to share God’s love in tangible ways, building trust and transforming lives through consistent presence and care.

Fin and Fruit Initiative

Fin and Fruit is Common Ground’s answer to food insecurity and sustainable agriculture. Operating Anticipation Acres, a community garden nestled between Dollar General and Prairie Bible Church, the initiative provides fresh, locally grown produce to families, businesses, and the local food bank. With kids’ gardening classes, composting programs, and plans for aquaponics and CSA boxes, Fin and Fruit is cultivating more than crops—it’s growing community resilience and education.

Youth Ministry

Every Monday evening, the Bakery transforms into a lively gathering space for high school students. Through Bible studies, mission trips, and service projects, Common Ground’s Youth Ministry offers a safe, welcoming environment where teens can explore faith, build friendships, and discover their purpose. It’s a place where young people are encouraged to belong, be beloved, and be themselves.

Coat and Backpack/Supply Drive

As seasons shift and school begins, Common Ground steps in with its annual Coat and Backpack Supply Drive. This ministry ensures that children in the community start the school year with the essentials—warm coats for winter and backpacks filled with supplies. It’s a simple yet powerful way to affirm dignity and readiness for every student, regardless of circumstance.

Mom’s Closet

In partnership with Delavan schools, Mom’s Closet provides food, clothing, and toiletries to families facing hardship. Whether it’s a single parent struggling to make ends meet or a child in need of basic hygiene items, this ministry quietly fills the gaps with compassion and discretion. It’s a lifeline for many—and a testament to Common Ground’s commitment to meeting material needs with grace.

Guided by Local Leadership

Common Ground’s mission is stewarded by a dedicated leadership team deeply rooted in Central Illinois. President Marty Harper leads with vision and heart, supported by Vice President Erin Kastner, who also serves as interim Secretary. Treasurer Doug Zimmer ensures financial transparency and sustainability. The board includes Steve Waggoner, Dave Wildenradt, Wes Springer, and Eric Diekhoff—each bringing unique strengths and a shared commitment to community transformation. Together, they guide the organization with integrity, compassion, and a clear sense of purpose.

Why Delavan Needs Common Ground

In a town like Delavan, where every gathering place matters and each resource carries weight, Common Ground is more than a nonprofit—it’s a lifeline. As rural communities across Illinois grapple with the loss of local businesses, schools, and services, keeping this facility open is essential to preserving Delavan’s quality of life. It’s a place where neighbors meet, youth are mentored, families are supported, and dignity is restored. Losing Common Ground would mean more than shuttered doors—it would mean a dimming of the light that so many rely on. Supporting it isn’t just charity—it’s an investment in the soul of Delavan.
